Motorcycle MOT centres near you

Find a local garage that carries out motorcycle or motorbike MOT tests. Enter your postcode to see centres recorded as testing Class 1 or Class 2 motorcycles in your area. The results combine both classes so you do not need to understand the DVSA classification before searching.

Which motorcycle MOT class do I need?

Most riders do not need to choose a class before searching because the finder checks both types. The test centre can confirm the correct class when you book. Always check its authorisation and appointment availability before travelling, particularly if you have a motorcycle with a sidecar, an electric motorcycle or an unusual vehicle configuration.

How much does a motorcycle MOT cost?

The statutory maximum motorcycle MOT fee is £29.65 for a standard Class 1 or Class 2 motorcycle. A motorcycle with a sidecar has a different maximum fee. Garages can charge less than the statutory maximum, so compare the quoted test price as well as availability and distance.

The MOT fee normally covers the test itself. Repairs, servicing and some retest circumstances may involve additional charges. Confirm the total price and retest policy when booking. See the current official MOT fee table before relying on a quoted maximum.

What is checked during a motorcycle MOT?

A motorcycle MOT assesses whether important safety and environmental components meet the required standard on the day of the test. The inspection typically includes:

  • Lights, reflectors and electrical equipment
  • Steering, suspension and wheel alignment
  • Brakes, wheels and tyres
  • Frame, forks and other structural components
  • Exhaust system, fuel system and emissions where applicable
  • Seats, footrests, controls and the horn
  • Registration plate and vehicle identification details

An MOT is not the same as a service. It does not assess the motorcycle's general mechanical condition in the same depth, so regular servicing and maintenance are still important.

Preparing your motorcycle for its MOT

Simple checks before the appointment can help you identify obvious problems:

  1. Check that the headlight, rear light, brake light and indicators operate correctly.
  2. Inspect both tyres for damage, adequate tread and suitable pressure.
  3. Test the front and rear brakes and make sure the controls move freely.
  4. Check the chain condition and tension where applicable.
  5. Make sure the horn works and the registration plate is secure and readable.
  6. Look for fluid leaks, loose components and excessive exhaust noise.

Do not rely on this checklist as a guarantee of passing. A qualified tester will inspect areas that are difficult to assess without the correct equipment and experience.

Booking a motorcycle MOT

Contact the garage to confirm that it can test your motorcycle, ask about the current price and arrange a suitable time. Motorcycle testing may only be available on particular days, even where a centre is authorised for it.

Before booking, ask:

  • Whether the centre tests your motorcycle class and vehicle type
  • The test price and accepted payment methods
  • Whether booking is required or walk-ins are accepted
  • How long you should allow for the appointment
  • Whether repairs and a retest can be handled on site if the motorcycle fails

What happens if the motorcycle fails?

The tester will provide a record explaining the defects found and how serious they are. The motorcycle may need repairs before it can be used normally or pass a retest. Ask the centre whether it carries out repairs, what retest arrangements apply and whether the motorcycle is safe and legal to ride away.

Finding a motorcycle MOT garage nearby

Use a full postcode for the most relevant local results. If no Class 1 or Class 2 centre is recorded in that postcode district, broaden the search to nearby towns or postcode areas. Database classifications can change, so confirm the service directly with the garage before setting out.

Motorcycle MOT questions

Can any car MOT garage test a motorcycle?

No. A test centre must be authorised for the relevant motorcycle class and have the appropriate testing facilities. A garage that carries out car MOTs may not offer motorcycle MOTs.

How long does a motorcycle MOT take?

Appointment length varies by centre and vehicle. Ask how much time to allow when booking, particularly if you plan to wait at the garage or need a same-day test.

Do I need to choose Class 1 or Class 2 when searching?

No. This finder returns centres recorded for either class. Tell the garage your motorcycle's engine capacity and configuration when booking so it can confirm suitability.

Can I get a motorcycle MOT without an appointment?

Some centres accept walk-ins, but availability varies and motorcycle testing may only be offered at certain times. Contacting the centre first avoids a wasted journey.

Does an MOT include servicing or repairs?

No. The MOT is an inspection against statutory test requirements. Servicing, diagnosis and repairs are separate unless the garage agrees to carry them out.

How accurate are the listings?

Listings are based on public test-station information and additional business data. Authorisations, opening hours and services can change, so verify the details with the centre before booking.
